A Life Designed by God

When I look back over my life now, I can see something I could not see while I was living it. I see a God who was designing a life for His purposes. My journey has taken me through many different seasons — naval air combat operations, multifunctional leadership roles with GE across markets around the world, ultimately serving as a Division VP/GM, then recruited to be CEO of 5 companies, both public and private, leading them through going public or being acquired. Along the way, I also served in Christian churches and organizations in a variety of roles. Eventually, something became increasingly clear: God was calling me to make serving Him a much greater focus of my life.

The Realization That Changed Everything

The realization was this! When you're doing what God has called you to do for that season of your life — when you're in your God-given Sweet Spot — by that I mean when all five of the unique personal attributes God designed you with are in a match, in sync with what God has called you to do, that's when you achieve the level of fulfillment and fruitfulness that God intends and the Bible promises.

That was the difference. When I recognized that following God's will and calling — doing exactly what He wanted me to do and being who He wired me to be — that was when I, and you, achieve the highest level of achievement, productivity, and happiness.

A further realization that made a significant difference, was that God calls us to a specific purpose and equips us for that role. God does not call us to do something He did not equip us to do. We are equipped to uniquely do what He calls us to do. However, it is important to understand that God calls us to address different needs and issues throughout our life. The key is understanding the mix of personal attributes unique to each of us, recognizing which are dominant and which are supportive, and then fully understanding how the supportive abilities and gifts arise to align with God's calling — so understanding the specifics of how God designed you provides the foundation for knowing that when God calls, no worries, you are equipped.

Finally, it has become evident to me why so many of us, at every age, are unengaged and unmotivated. The biblical answer is clear: for many, the cause is simply not being in alignment with God's call and not understanding the unique personal attributes the Creator designed each of us with that enables experiencing the lifelong purpose and joy that God intends.

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." — Jeremiah 29:11

Why I Am Here

Our lives are not ultimately about us. They are about Him. Our gifts are His gifts. Our opportunities are His entrustments. Our time is His. Our relationships are His. Our resources are His. And even our stories — with all their successes, failures, joys, and sorrows — can become instruments in His hands.

That is why I call this Designed for His Purpose. It is an invitation to stop asking only, 'What do I want to do with my life?' and begin asking, 'Lord, what did You create me to do, and how can I faithfully use what You have given me for Your glory?'

My prayer is that, as we spend this time together, you will begin to look at your own life differently. That you will look back and recognize God's fingerprints in places you previously overlooked. That you will begin to understand how He has shaped you through your gifts, your experiences, your relationships, your successes, your failures, and the seasons through which He has brought you.

You were designed intentionally. You were equipped uniquely. You have been entrusted with a purpose. And if God has given you another day, then He has given you another opportunity to live that day for Him.

God is not finished with you. And He is not finished with me. Whatever good has come from my life ultimately came from Him. And whatever years remain, I want them to be used faithfully. That is why I am here — and that is why we are going to begin this journey together: Designed for His Purpose.
